How to Draw on Your Partner's iPhone Lock Screen & Widgets

By the Twoodle team · November 2026

Picture this: you're at work, your partner's across town, and you want to say "hi, I like you" without typing yet another "hey, thinking of you" text that reads like a bank notification.

So you draw a dog. It's supposed to be your dog. It looks like a potato with opinions.

You send it anyway, and it shows up on their phone.

That's the whole idea here. A bad little doodle that just shows up beats a perfect paragraph, and it takes almost no effort.

So can you draw straight onto your partner's iPhone Lock Screen? Let's get the honest answer out of the way first.

The short answer (it's "sort of")

iOS won't let one person draw onto another person's phone. Apple isn't going to give your ex-roommate that power, and honestly, good.

What does work is an app that syncs your drawing to a widget on your partner's iPhone. You both install the same app, pair up, and whatever you send shows up on their screen.

Full disclosure: we make Twoodle, one of the apps that does this, so the steps below use it. It's iPhone only and needs iOS 18 or later.

What you need

  • Two iPhones running iOS 18 or later
  • The same app on both
  • A way to pair. In Twoodle, one of you creates a pair and the other types in the invite code.

That's it. No cables, no boxes in the mail, no "have you tried turning your relationship off and on again."

Step by step with Twoodle

1. Install and pair

Download Twoodle from the App Store. There's no sign-up form, because the app creates an account for you automatically. One of you creates a pair and shares the invite code, and the other enters it.

Pairing is part of Twoodle Pro, and one subscription covers both of you. You only pay once for the two of you.

2. Put the widget on your Home Screen

  1. Touch and hold an empty spot on your Home Screen until the icons start wiggling.
  2. Tap the + button in the top corner.
  3. Search for Twoodle, pick a widget and a size, and tap Add Widget.

Now make your partner do the same on their phone. This is the step people skip, then wonder why nothing shows up. The widget is the thing that displays what you send.

3. Draw something. Anything. Send it.

Open Twoodle, pick one of your photos or a blank canvas, and doodle. Hit send. It fades onto your partner's Home Screen widget.

Artistic skill is optional. Possibly even a handicap.

4. Draw together, live

This is the fun one. Twoodle has a shared canvas styled like a Lock Screen. You both open it and draw at the same time, and every stroke shows up on your partner's phone as you make it.

When you're done, save it to your gallery or send it to their widget. Expect at least one drawing of a mustache.

5. Add Lock Screen widgets

  1. Wake your iPhone and touch and hold the Lock Screen.
  2. Tap Customize, then choose Lock Screen.
  3. Tap the widget area under the clock and pick a Twoodle widget.

The Love Note widget can live on your Lock Screen or Home Screen. The Days Together widget sits on the Lock Screen and counts your days as a couple, which is a sneaky-sweet way to remember how long it's been.

What shows up where

Here's the part that trips people up. Doodles go to the Home Screen. The Lock Screen gets its own widgets.

Things worth knowing before you get attached

  • It isn't instant. iOS decides when a widget redraws, so there can be a short delay after your partner sends something. Not a bug, just iPhones being iPhones.
  • It's iPhone only for now. If your partner is on Android, this won't work for you yet. Sorry. We feel it too.
  • Pairing needs Twoodle Pro. It's $3.99/week with a 3-day free trial, or $49.99/year, and it covers both of you.

Other apps that do something similar

We'd love to tell you we're the only game in town, but we're not. Apps such as Paint Love, noteit, Pairly, LoveSketch and UsTwo also let couples send drawings or notes to each other's widgets. We haven't compared every feature, so check each app's App Store page and reviews before you commit.

FAQ

Can you draw directly on someone else's iPhone Lock Screen?

Not with iOS alone. Apple doesn't let one person draw onto another person's Lock Screen. Apps work around this by syncing a drawing to a widget on your partner's phone, so you both need the same app installed.

Does my partner need the app too?

Yes. In Twoodle you pair with one partner using an invite code, and what you send appears in their app and widgets.

Does it work on Android?

Twoodle is iPhone only right now and requires iOS 18 or later.

Why isn't the widget updating right away?

Twoodle refreshes the widget when your partner sends something, but iOS controls exactly when a widget redraws, so there can be a short delay. Opening the app once and making sure notifications are allowed usually helps. If it keeps happening, contact support.

P.S. You don't have to be good at drawing. You just have to be the person who bothered to draw. Grab Twoodle and send the first one tonight.
